Realistic Small Company Network needs surveyIf you have two computers, you probably can benefit from connecting them. With three or more, chances are you will gain functionality and productivity with a simple local area network. If you have more than five, then networking them could be the single greatest thing you do this year to enhance your company's communication and productivity. But LAN doesn't have to be a four-letter word! Many small businesses (five or fewer free-standing computers) may not need a server-based (Novell Netware® or Windows NT/2000 Server®) network that major corporations need or that some computer system sellers and network installers may want you to buy. You can have the functional benefits of a Local Area Network for so little cost and complexity that you will wonder why you waited so long to do it! Accounting & bookkeeping systemsHere's some popular advice: Be sure you install an accounting system that will be able to grow with your business. Good advice? Maybe, but here is another thought: Don't buy an accounting system that is so expensive and complex that it consumes so much of you time and your employees' time that you can't run your business. Buy what you need. The moderately priced accounting systems available today provide functionality and capacity, job costing, manufacturing, even Internet commerce. You might need one of those big expensive systems, but you might not. I'm not selling software or hardware, so I'll just tell you what I think and why. QuickBooks and Peachtree-Get them working!You responded to one of those QuickBooks Pro® ads ("If you can write a check, you can do your accounting with Quickbooks!"). Peachtree Complete Accounting. Looks good. Job costing, manufacturing, LIFO inventory, but how do I ...? You are not alone. The truth is those programs are excellent, very reasonably priced accounting systems. The problem is that they won't make you an accountant. Get them set up right; get someone to look from time to time; have someone to call when something new comes up. Most small business operators can use QuickBooks or Peachtree, but they have to be set up correctly for your business. Someone who can do that and who has real business accounting experience can assure that you get the most out of those programs now and later. IMPORTANT! QuickBooks and Peachtree are similar in many respects, however each has distinct and significant advantages, capabilities, and weaknesses. Data backupIt's . Have you backed up your data today? This is still one of the more neglected aspects of computer and accounting system planning. New technology makes backing up easier, faster, and more reliable, but only if you do it. The fact is that data backup is more important than ever and can be easier than ever. Routine Maintenance & TroubleshootingHere's how it happens. You had two PC’s, then you added one, then another, and now you have ten of them. You have the knowledge and skills to keep up with all the hardware, software, updates, and training, but you've run out of time, and now you need help taking care of all those computers and their users, or you are going to go crazy! You need to add a printer to that PC but the new one won't work with the A/B switch box. Why won't that scanner work? This computer is out of disk space. What is USB, anyway? This one keeps giving a General Protection Fault. What can you do? This computer was running just fine until last week when you installed WinZapWizFax, and now email is gone, and the sound card stopped working. What? Upgrade advice and assistanceVery often, a computer that is "too slow" needs no more than a memory upgrade--more RAM. Sometimes just a few adjustments to Windows® 95 or 98 settings, a little cleanup, and a few other minor setup revisions, and it's like new again. (OK not exactly a new computer, but a lot better!) But sometimes the best upgrade is a replacement, now that hardware prices are so low. As it turns out, though, an increasingly significant cost of PC replacement is the time required to install and configure the new PC and the time to reinstall your applications. [ Top ]
